Description
Opportunity
The Porsche Carrera 3.0 is one of the rarest production 911s ever built, and this exceptional example is fresh out of a 10 year restoration..
Supplied new in the UK by A.F.N. Limited in 1977, this matching-numbers, right-hand-drive Carrera 3.0 has benefited from an extraordinary 11-year restoration costing in excess of £100,000. Every aspect of the project was guided by a single principle: preserve as much of the car’s original period character and authenticity as possible.
Its rarity is equally remarkable. Just 577 right-hand-drive Carrera 3.0s were produced in 1977, and today the model is even scarcer. According to the Porsche Club Great Britain database, only 75 right-hand-drive 1977 Carrera 3.0 Coupés are currently registered, making this an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire one of Porsche’s most coveted air-cooled classics.
Period quote
….. that the Carrera 3.0, despite a reputation for being a ‘tamed-down’ version of the original 2.7RS and 2.7 Carreras, had almost identical 0-60 and 0-100mph performance figures but was endowed with so much extra torque that it could pull from 25 to 100mph in top gear over 3 seconds faster than either of its production predecessors
Maintenance & Condition
Having covered fewer than 100 miles since the restoration was completed, the car presents and drives as though it has just left the showroom. But make no mistake—this is no restomod or reimagined classic. It is the genuine article: a matching-numbers, 3.0-litre Carrera restored to an exceptional standard, with painstaking attention paid to preserving its originality, authenticity and factory Specification
Engine & Drivetrain
The matching-numbers 3.0-litre flat-six was completely stripped and rebuilt by renowned Porsche engine specialist Nathan Young, a respected technical contributor to the Porsche Club GB 2.7 and 3.0 Registers. The comprehensive rebuild included the installation of high-performance ARP head studs, new valve guides, a new exhaust valve, piston rings, a full gasket set, refurbished cylinder heads, a stainless-steel heat exchanger, and numerous additional internal components. The fuel injection system was also comprehensively overhauled by KMI, with refurbished components and new injectors fitted to ensure optimum performance and reliability.
The gearbox was entrusted to Mike Fletcher, formerly of Tuthill Porsche and Prodrive, who carried out a full reconditioning. New synchromesh rings and ratio bearings were fitted, ensuring the transmission performs as precisely as when new.
Suspension, Brakes & Wheels
The car is offered with a freshly refurbished, date-correct set of 6J and 7J x 15-inch Cookie Cutter alloy wheels. Alternatively, it can be supplied with the desirable 7J and 8J x 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels shown in the photographs, should the next owner prefer their appearance.
The braking system inspires confidence with a reassuringly firm pedal, benefitting from a recent brake fluid change as part of the car’s ongoing preparation. On the road, the Carrera feels every bit as precise as its meticulous restoration suggests, with sharp steering, beautifully composed handling and a taut, confidence-inspiring chassis that belies its age. It drives with the tight, cohesive feel expected of a freshly restored, making it as rewarding from behind the wheel as it is visually impressive.
Body, Paint & Trim
The car was completely dismantled to its bare bodyshell, with every original body panel—including the roof—carefully removed, stripped and inspected. Wherever corrosion was identified, the affected areas were shot-blasted and re-galvanised before repairs were carried out using ferritic stainless steel, a material chosen for its exceptional corrosion resistance. The repaired areas were then correctly primed and undersealed to ensure long-term protection.
A key principle of the restoration was to preserve as much of the factory galvanising as possible. Rather than stripping the entire body to bare metal, only the areas requiring repair were taken back, avoiding unnecessary removal of the original zinc coating—an approach widely regarded as far more sympathetic than a full bare-metal restoration.
The original paint was chemically stripped rather than media blasted, further protecting the galvanised shell, while all glass was removed and refitted with new seals. In 2020, the body was refinished in its original factory special-order colour, Metallic Platinum (Paint Code W1/944), returning the car to its correct period appearance.
Interior
The interior has been meticulously preserved, retaining many of the features that make the Carrera 3.0 so distinctive. It is fitted with the highly desirable black pinstripe sports seats, complemented by the correct long-pile carpets—an exclusive feature fitted only to cars produced between late 1976 and early 1978. The original headlining has been carefully retained, while the period-correct Blaupunkt Essen radio-cassette has been cleaned and refurbished. Wherever possible, original components have been preserved and sympathetically restored, maintaining the car’s authenticity and period character.
